Cutting Sinful Ties

“And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” Matthew 5:30 (ESV)

God tells us in Matthew 5:30 to cut off the hand that causes us to sin. Taken literally, this sounds morbid and unmerciful, but if you think deeper, you will discover what God is really saying. He calls us to consider ourselves, to look inside our hearts, and cut off all of the sinful ties in our lives.

About a year ago, I stood in my mom’s bathroom, anxiously waiting as she hesitantly bleached the ends of my dark brown hair. I was thrilled with the end product! Every few weeks we would repeat the bleaching process, making it lighter and lighter, until finally my hair seemed fried beyond repair.

The coconut oil treatments and “damage-control” conditioning no longer seemed to have an effect. I could now either cut off the pretty blonde or keep dealing with its coarse tangles every morning.

Sometimes, as Christians, we are faced with the same choice when we let sin pile up. From a distance, my blonde ombre looked really good, but up close it was tangled from all the split ends. Sin can be the same way; to the world it looks really good, but in reality it is separating us from God.

Dear Lord,
Show me the areas in my life that need to be cut off. Give me the strength and courage to follow through, even when it is difficult. Guide my thoughts and keep my eyes focused up on You. Amen.

What sinful ties are being revealed to you that need to be cut off?
How can you take steps towards distancing yourself from them?
What negative thing is God trying to replace with a positive in your life?
