Peace on Election Day

Today is the big day! For many months the media has been buzzing with memes and funny posts about the presidential candidates, making light of this incredibly difficult situation we are in. It wasn’t until this week that my mindset on the election changed from feeling light and care-free to feeling serious and legitimately concerned for the well-being of America. And this week, it seems that everywhere I go, someone is expressing a new scary thought about what could happen if this person or that person gets elected. Needless to say, this day has been in my prayers for awhile, and today my prayer is for peace and calming when anxieties rise up. So when preparing to write this devotional, I thought, what better way to help calm my anxiety than to read what God has to say about it? So today’s devotional incudes some powerful verses I’ve picked out, in hopes you will experience the same peace that I felt when reading them and praying about them.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34 (ESV)

We are to be strong and courageous, Jesus is within us and He never leaves. When we think thought of discouragement, we are letting our guard down and allowing the presence of anxiety to surface in our mind. Pray, repeat these verses to yourself, be assured, be comforted.

“For kingship belongs to the Lord, and He rules over the nations.” Psalm 22:28 (ESV)

Ultimately, regardless of the outcome of the election, God is always the Ruler of all nations, the King of the world he created. Our praise belongs to Him, and no one else. Just as He is Ruler over our lives, He is Ruler over even the most important leaders of our country.

“The Lord of hosts has sworn: ‘As I have planned, so it shall be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand.’” Isaiah 14:24 (ESV)

Be reminded, this is God’s pan. His plans are greater and more perfect than we could ever imagine. The intricate details He has created for us, the outlines of our lives, the results of elections, He has made them all according to His will and He is always in control.

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?” Jeremiah 32:37 (ESV)

When we fear the future, we are questioning the power of God. We are allowing our trust in Him to waiver, when our whole relationship with Him should be built on trust. It is the foundation. Without trusting Him, how can you say you believe in Him? Nothing is too difficult, nothing is stronger than our God, and when we fully accept this, we can live a life of trusting His promises. Believing His power is greater than any other, we can truly walk in faith and face anything life has to offer with a steady peace and calmness.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (ESV)

God has already overcome this world. We can live a life without a fear of tomorrow. He has already paid the price for our peace. Allow Him to calm all of your fears, and let these verses be a reminder to you of God’s presence in and control over our lives.

PRAY
Dear Lord,
I thank You so much for this country.
I am so grateful that I live in place I can freely worship You.
Today I ask for a peace to wash over me. Let Your presence flood me with comfort as I face uncertainties, and as our whole nation faces uncertainties.
I pray for national unity today, that we can unite through these hardships instead of pushing each other away.
I pray for the security and safety of national leaders. Put Your hand over them and protect them from any dangers.
God, I ask for relief of tensions among candidates. I pray for their anxiety and extensive amounts of stress.
Let this country always look to You first, and help our politicians to stand strong in their faith even when the road ahead seems discouraging.
Amen.
Have a blessed election day, and remember to show someone some kindness!
Smile, God’s got this! J
