A Clean Heart

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)

A few summers ago, this Bible verse became somewhat of a mantra to me. I was going through hardships in many areas and it was very easy for me to get frustrated, or in a slump of bad thoughts. Negativity flooded my head all of the time. I struggled to keep my mind in check - anger, frustration, impurity, anxiety, doubt, and worry were all battling my spirit for a place in my head. It seemed like things were all crumbling down.

I wasn’t happy, and although I still felt God’s presence in my life, I was ignoring all His attempts to guide me.

I don’t remember where I saw the verse; it could’ve been a painted sign in Hobby Lobby, a message in church, the daily verse on the YouVersion app; regardless of where I found it, when I read it, I took it to heart. Something changed in me when I began to meditate on the verse. I started taking action to prevent my flesh from doing what it wanted. Each time I had a negative thought, I would repeat this verse to myself. At first I would say it out loud, then over time, I didn’t have to think about it as much. It began to come naturally to me. Something about the verse, God’s word, would change my heart and I suddenly wouldn’t feel as unsettled.

The next step after saying the verse was to either pray about my line of thinking or turn the negative thought around completely and find something positive about the situation.

I can honestly say after a few days of this, I felt so much better. I felt healthier, both spiritually and mentally. It was so refreshing, to feel cleansed and pure and whole. All of Psalm 51 is so incredibly beautiful to me. It is a song of cleansing. David recognizes his sinful state and calls upon God for restoration, to be purified and renewed.

We too can sing a song of purification, cry out to God, allow Him to refresh you. He will cleanse your mind, and set you on the path of righteousness.

Dear Lord,
I recognize my sinful state; I ask You for a renewal of my mind and spirit. Lord cleanse me, search my mind and help me create a mental environment of pure, positive and holy thinking. Help me keep my eyes up on You through all of the struggles of this life. Amen.

I encourage you to find a verse to use as your “mantra,” to help you through whatever you are facing right now.

Read Psalm 51 in its entirety and be open to any words the Holy Spirit should offer about it.

“Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love, according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgement. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:1-10)
