Remembering God's Goodness

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?” (Psalm 77:11-13)

A couple of days ago, my youth pastor asked me to look back on my life and recall circumstances in which I’ve seen God work and move. Honestly, that was way harder for me than I expected. During that moment, I realized that I don’t take enough time to meditate and reflect on the Lord’s goodness in my life (nearly as much as I should). Frequently, I rush through life in a haze and don’t truly pause often enough to recognize the good things God does for me and through me.

Identifying and remembering God’s goodness is crucial in a believer’s life. If we don’t truly realize the Lord’s graciousness and see His compassion played out in our daily lives, we’ll begin to doubt the character of God. We’ll look at the world around us and only see its ugly brokenness instead of the beautiful fullness we have in Christ.

Some of my most irritating days happen when I allow myself to become overwhelmed by every tiny detail that goes wrong. This causes me to forget focusing on the little blessings God always gives me. The problem isn’t that the Lord fails to give us blessings; quite the contrary is true actually.

In Psalm 103:5, David says that God “satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” So instead of the problem being a lack of blessings, the issue actually rests with us forgetting to look for God’s goodness in our lives.

All throughout the Old Testament, the people of Israel set up monuments and holidays to simply remember the Lord’s faithfulness to them. Today, it’s still just as important to reflect on everything God has done. He is constantly doing amazing and wonderful things, but it’s up to us to recognize them. Because we are children of God, He wants us to delight in Him and experience all of the blessings, both big and small, that He so graciously bestows upon us.

Yes - each day may have its hardships, but each day is also filled with little blessings purposefully placed by the Lord. Because He loves us, He wants us to experience His goodness. It’s easier to notice God’s tender mercies when we have an attitude of gratitude. Thankful hearts are more prone to remember all of the good things the Lord does. I’ve found that journaling God’s goodness is also a great way to recall all of the times He’s worked and moved.

Dear Lord, help me to recognize when You move in my life. Give me the clarity to recall all of the times You’ve worked in and through me. Often, my view of You becomes clouded, so I ask that You would help me to see You clearly in everything. Thank You for You constant and persistent goodness towards me. You are so unfathomably gracious, Lord. Thank You for filling

my life with good things. Help me to see Your blessings all throughout my days and to give You the proper praise You deserve for them. Amen.

How have you seen the Lord work and move in your life?
How can you better notice and remember God’s goodness?
If you enjoy journaling, try keeping a record of how you’ve seen God working.
This week, try maintaining an attitude of gratitude so that your heart will be more inclined to thankfulness.
